Real Madrid 5 – 0 Cornella

2/12/2014

A brace from James Rodriguez helped Real Madrid stroll to a 17th successive victory as third-tier Cornella were brushed aside at the Santiago Bernabéu.

Goals from James, Isco and Jese Rodriguez meant that Los Blancos secured a 9-1 aggregate win in this Copa Del Ray round-of-32 fixture.

Cornella had a great chance to break the deadlock in the 14th minute after Alvaro Arbeloa brought down Xavi Boniquet in the box but the Cornella striker subsequently blazed the penalty over the bar.

90 seconds later Cornella were punished after James scored a delightful chip. The Colombian beat the offside trap and sprinted onto the end of Isco’s threaded pass to lob the ball over the oncoming Inigo Alberto.

Real doubled their lead with just over half an hour played. The Cornella defence were caught napping as James picked the ball up on the half-way line before slotting the ball through to Isco, who comfortably dinked the ball into Inigo’s net.

James was again involved 70 seconds after Isco’s goal, as Ancelotti’s men went 3-0 up in the 34th minute. This time Isco turned provider and scooped the ball into the path of James, who curled the ball into the bottom left-hand corner.

Real’s fourth goal came on the hour after Hernandez saw his quick shot rebound off the bar onto Israel Delgado’s knee. There was nothing the Cornella defender could have done to prevent the own-goal. Jese scored the fifth in the 77th minute to secure Real’s win.

The victory sets up a possible meeting with rivals Atletico Madrid in the quarter-finals.
